Mid-War German Vehicles | FOW

Here are a selection of vehicles I finished up kinda-quickly for the FOW Mid-War Doubles tournament at the Last Square in Madison held at beginning of the month [we got shellacked, but it was fun...]. Anyhoo, learned a lot painting these that I will apply to my next batch of FOW figures [that being a 1000 point Grenadier force for Adepticon].  Will also be playing at an Mid-War singles event @ Tower Games in Minneapolis on Jan 5th for which I need to paint up some Brummbars and Marder III Ms...

Adepticon 2013 WAB Hastings Redux Terrain | WIP

I am GMing the Hastings Redux WAB game at Adepticon 2013 and working with the very talented terrain-meister, Mr. Mark Sommer on the the battlefield.  Well actually, I am more like thinking stuff up than doing any actual terrain building...

A more in-depth explanation of what we are up to and WIPs, etc. can be found on Marks blog: Baddogz Engineering

As a teaser, here is the preliminary sketch of the 16' x 4' modular battlefield...

Daemons of Chaos Soulgrinder | WHFB

Recent commission work... NOTE: I did not create the basic figure, which is a pretty cool BTW. The client created the base model by combining the Giant and Spider kits, I did all the GS work to tie it together. Model will be used as a Daemons of chaos Soulgrinder for warhammer fantasy.

I channeled "The Thing" for the leg stumps and ripped up britches Smoothed all the joins of the conversion.

A little Papa Nurgle for Lost in the Warp

As published in James Craig's Lost in the Warp Blog...

A short while back I was approached by James Craig to join with in with Shawn Welte [The Madhouse Workshop] to do a crossover project involving Chaos Beastmen. I was honored to be asked by these two extremely talented hobbyists and agreed to donate a model to the "cause". I've known James for quite awhile and Shawn even longer (we're the "Grumpy Old Coots" in double tournaments).  Anyhooo...

James wanted a Nurgle Themed Beastmen and I just happened to have a Nurgle Minotaur conversion that was...

Mid-War Mittlere Panzerkompanie WIP | FOW

Matt JayJack and I are playing in a Mod-War FOW doubles event in Madison in Dec.  I will be playing a German (circa 1942ish) Panzerkompanie and Matt will be running Fins. Got all the models built, now to base and paint.  I will be able to expand this pretty easily to a full sized army if I want down the Road.

My list (1165 points)

Panzer IV F1

Combat Platoons:

3 Panzer III N

3 Panzer IV F2 ("specials")

Divisional Support:

Medieval English | Muster the troops! [WAB]

Have finally assembled the figures for my Adepticon WAB singles army. I am rolling with Medieval English. I patterned the army after the British at Agincourt. The accuracy falls apart a little bit as I decided to build an allied unit of low-country pikemen.  The Jury is still out on them, I may build a unit of British spear or halberdmen instead to make the army more cohesive (and more accurate...)

I used Perry Bros for the army.  They are gorgeous and very dynamic. Bases are magnetic and made by Shogun Miniatures , they will make custom bases and movement trays at a very reasonable cost with a quick turnaround time. For example, I based all the archers on 20mmX30mm bases to depict open order.

Army List [as it stands now]:

16 Dismounted Knights [+Gen/ASB]
18 Dismounted Knights

18 Seasoned Archers [Stubborn|Stakes]
18 Seasoned Archers [Stubborn|Stakes]
18 Seasoned Archers [Stubborn|Stakes]
16 Archers

24 Low Country Pike

Thats a lot of lead...

Love the Perrys...

BTW, sorry for lack of posts. Been busy with work and working on terrain [building trees, etc. for the WAB at WaaghPaca tournament in Jan].

Ogres... | Adepticon Team Tournament 2009ish [WHFB]

As I continue to post models that may have not seen the light of day much, here are some Ogres I did up for the Adepticon WHFB Team tournament. I partnered with Shawn Welte and his awesome Chaos Warriors for the event.  All models are converted in some way. I am particularly happy with how the skin turned out on the Ogres and the thematic basing...

Nurgle Daemons | Chicago GT [WHFB]

Started to shoot pictures of My Chicago GT Army, and realized I had this shot (courtesy of the GW photographers on site) of the Army already.  Army list was pretty hard IMHO, I placed 5th (IIRC) and won Player's choice and 2nd in Appearance (to Shawn Welte's incredible Khorne daemons).  I am particularly pleased with Epidemus and all the Heralds.

Thanks for looking...

Game Table | Break-in [WAB]

Last weekend Matt J2 made it over for a game of WB. He ran my Caliphate army and I my Greeks [I used the Spartan early hoplite list from AoA2]. After taking forever [I have been working sporadically on a game table for 3 years as time allowed], it was great to have it finally finished and see some figures on it. There is a little more color to it than shows up in the pictures. I intend to add some tuft grass to add a little variation, esp. on the moveable terrain pieces.

Aun'Va | Completed [WH40K]

Aun'Va and Guards completed.  I was really pleased with this project (as was the client). I tend to convert and paint armies and not spend this kind of time on single figures.  I was able to work on several painting techniques I do not normally use (when painting en-masse).  Commission work is a great opportunity to stretch your boundaries both with technique and subjects.

Here is the team on their display base.

Aun'Va | WIP 2 [40K]

Well, as I stated before I'm not great at WIP shots.  At this point we have moved quite a bit forward...

Base layer of stone texture applied (yes, that is a lot of GS, but I was able to stretch it out pretty thinly)

Game Table WIP [15-28mm]

Unless it is for a commission, I am terrible at taking WIP shots. So after a ton of work, here is where I am at with my first attempt at modular terrain.  Intent is for an arid region [Mediterranean, Asian, African, etc.]. On hold for finishing until more static grass arrives for woodland scenics.  Will add some tuft grass and seal it afterwards.  Still need to make 2-4 woods stands and base up this Grendel Greek temple I have and should be finished.

I learned a lot doing this one, next I will make some 2' X 2' sections for a FOW table, however those will be more generic European in nature.  Please excuse the messy man-cave, son moved out to college and much moving is afoot :).

There are six 2' X 4' panels that can be arranged in quite a few configurations.

Aun'VA | WIP1 [40K]

An oldie that I haven't shown in detail yet. This was a pretty involved commission project of the Tau special character Aun'Va and his Guards.  Client wanted a display base as well as the ability to use the pieces in game play.

Concept sketch based on several emails with the client.  Aun'Va (in his Farscape looking floating throne thing) will be on a raised platform with his guards lower in relation to him. Setting will be an over grown, ancient temple.

PanzerKompanie | Eastern Front 1944 [FOW]

Here is what I have finished of my first FOW army.  PanzerKompanie from the Grey Wolf supplement book.  Still to finish: 10.5 cm towed artillery battery and FAMO recovery vehicle. Tiger is not part of 1750 point army.

Command: 2 PZIV H
I based the the organic platoons camo on a photo taken during Operation Bagration.

Empire "Capt. Morgan" Giant | WHFB

As part of a series of conversions for a client from Norway (!).  Earlier I did the empire Ogres (I posted these earlier...) for his army and he wanted me to do a Greatswords themed empire giant...

No rest for the wicked and what now for WAB...

Well, now I am off to Fort Lewis, WA for 6 weeks. Will be back in Mid-July. Taking a primered FOW German Army (Panzer Kompanie from Grey Wolf) and supplies with me, so hopefully I will have some new stuff to show when I get back. I am taking a load of "old stuff" pics with me, so the blog shouldn't be silent while I'm gone...

WAB... well there has been a lot of angst flying around about Warhammer Historicals closing.  I wouldn't be surprised if it was folded into the Black Library, nor would I if it was sold to someone else.  For me, I love the Game System, was pretty close to being as good as it could be.  I intend to keep playing WAB, perhaps it will become the Blood Bowl of tabletop games. Or...I will have to try out some other systems to keep rolling dice.  GW sure has moved away from the beer, pretzels, and love of the game boners I remember from 1987... Progress... Sigh...

Adepticon Part II: WAB Singles Rounds 2 and 3

Sorry for the delay, bid ceremony today for ROTC (where I work) and my commencement is tomorrow... whew.

Here we are all set for round 2.  My caliphates vs. Abe's Teutonics.
Lots o' really hard knights and infantry.  Scenario was to claim and hold objectives.

Battle Lines set.  As you can see I easily outnumber Abe's Army 2 to 1.
Matt J2 is looking on...

Adepticon Part II: WAB Singles First Round

The AdepticonWAB singles began "gentlemanly" early on Saturday morning.  After a rousing evening of re-fighting the crusades, I had a pretty good idea of what my Caliphate army can and (as you will see) cannot do. Rich again put on and ran a wonderful event with clever scenarios, quality terrain and tables, and professional time management (well played Rich, well played).

Lots of old friends and new faces this year...

Here is my singles army...

Adepticon Part I: The Crusades Game [WAB]

Sorry for the delay, had to work (Day-Job and Homework) all weekend. Here are a load of shots from the Friday Night Border Princes Game at Adepticon.

Team Crusader: Shawn (PPC), Jerrod, Merle, and Nostromo (Team Captain).
Team Saracen: Kevin Bruins, RichN, Pat aka SoCalWarhammer, and myself (Team Captain).

Note: Okay, I do actually know how to take pictures. Yes, the color on pics is all over the place, because some ya-hoo (aka me) had the color balance set to custom for studio work.  I will have fixed this for Sat and Sunday's picks.

Note 2: I had some vision of taking a bunch of organized shots, but that faded away in the heat of dice, laughter (and beer), and scowling (and beer).

BLUF: Saracen victory by one battle point (!) due in no small part to the leadership of the Team Captain, well maybe not so much on that one (my army was expended holding off 6 (!) knight units so my team mates could go grab BPs).  Rich created 3 linked/simultaneous scenarios that were both challenging and fun.

Saracen Hero(s) of the game: Naffatun, 'nuff said.  Hard to kill people when you are on fire...

Adepticon Back Brief coming soon... [WAB]

Had a great time at Adepticon, played WAB for 3 days [Fri: Crusades Game, Sat: WAB Singles, and Sun: WAB Doubles] and caught up with some old friends. I will have a report with pictures up for each day shortly.

Will my Ghulams hold the Flank?

road to Adepticon 2012 | Part VII Road Trip!... [WAB]

All finished and ready to go.  Here are some (craptastic) pics of the Caliphate Army.  IMHO, not bad for being painted from December to now.  Better Shots and some Bat Reps after this weekend.  Cheers!

My Singles Army.

Road to Adepticon 2012 | Part VI 2-hour Camels... [WAB]

Without a doubt the most rushed job I have ever done, 2 hours primer to dip... Whew.  Need them for the Big Crusades game on Friday... Finished Naffatun and finishing basing on everything (aside from the shiny camels below).  Singles force complete, well almost.

Road to Adepticon 2012 | Part V the Naffatun arrive! [WAB]

Well, The Musketeer Naffatun I ordered last Friday arrived today from the UK, not bad for shipping speed. Always great service from GB (who handle musketeer shipping)
Here they are awaiting Primer.  I will play these as 2 units of 5 models.

The Road to Adepticon 2012 | Abbasid Caliphate Pt. III [WAB]

Well... Not much on miniature photos (my basement area is a multi-tasking mess right now between school and miniatures, no time to set up to shoot pictures, sigh, my time is really that tight), but some movement on my Adepticon Army regardless.

What a flipping mess, makes me itch...

Why I haven't posted this week...

What I've been up to this week, shooting and editing photos of my Graphic Design work for my senior portfolio. Like pulling out teeth.  Sigh...

Alibi, a board game, is one of my projects this year. Based on a 1929 Gangster movie, I created the game mechanics and all the individual components...

I did get 4 berber units dipped and waiting to dullcoat this weekend, more to follow.

Thanks for looking

Empire Ogres [WHFB]

Between work and my capstone graphic design course, I haven't been up to anything new this week. So here is the first one of two large conversion projects I did for a client a while back to fill in this week...

The project was for 4 Empire themed Ironguts...

Friday, March 2, 2012

Okay, now here is some really old stuff...

Joining in the theme...

Circa 1994 or so...These are the earliest conversions of mine that I have pictures of.  Was for WHFB V2 or 3, I forget.  The entire worm thing is putty. The rider is a (now OOP) Nurgle Palanquin bit.

And here is a Nurgle Chariot from the same time frame. Yes, that is a Heroquest chaos warrior. Back then I had a lot more time than cash, so conversions were the order of the day (and still are...).  Check out the retro plant things. Good times, good times.

Thanks for looking.

Lost and the Damned | Great UnClean One and Spawn [WH40K]

Here are some more shots from my LATD Army.

One of my 2 HQ choices.  I was on a "Akira" kick at the time. I wanted to really make it look like the Blood Angel was having a bad day.

The Road to Adepticon 2012 | Almohad Berbers Pt. II [WAB]

As some of you know, for some crazy reason I decided to go back to school for a Graphic Design degree while working full time. So this May I finish up, whew.  I will keep updates, etc. as best I can... I usually sneak in an hour of hobby time here and there so I can stay on schedule for Adepticon.

So, part II...  Here are the Christian Spanish Guard [using Musketeer Armored Arab infantry as explained in Part I] spearmen, about 75% done... They have been dipped [well brushed, I do not like the whole pliers/slinging experience, ended up tossing a spearmen across my really, that happened] and matt sprayed. I painted most of their hair/beards grey to show their veteran status. Next is highlighting/cleaning up, Shield Decals from LBM, painting the flags and bases... about 2-3 hours +/-.

I made all the banners out of green stuff, pretty much follow PPC's guide.  I do hang the flags to cure at an angle to look like they are in the wind and I did all the infantry banners at once they all have the same look and direction, helps unify the army... I tried Little Big Men Flags, which are gorgeous, but I just can't seem to get them to work right, sigh...

Lost and the Damned | Basilisk Battery [WH40K]

Even more old stuff, from my Lost and the Damned army.  Basilisk Battery consisting of 2 Basilisks and Ammo Carrier. Barrels are Brass tubing, Gun shields are Forgeworld.  The rest is me not knowing when to quit. A bit heavy handed on the paint, but that was how I rolled in those days... Banners are my favorite bit, along with the ammo carrier.

The Road to Adepticon 2012 | Almohad Berbers Pt. I [WAB]

For this years Adepticon WAB tournament I am going to run North African Berbers using the new Armies of Antiquity [AoA] army list.  AoA is a valiant attempt to cross level points across the range of armies available and does a decent job of introducing armies that have not been covered before.  With a soon to be published errata it will be, IMHO, what future WAB events will be run out of.  Points are structured differently, so a 2800 point AoA equals for the most part a 2000 WAB army from one of the several older published supplements.  All the Berber units and Guard spearmen will be Musketeer figures [a nice hefty 28mm and easy to paint... I do have a lot of models to do], the balance will be Crusader models.

My "final' list for the Adepticon WAB singles tournament:

Tuesday, February 7, 2012

Okay, I'll see your Crusaders and raise you 96 Berbers [WAB]

After a taunt from PsychosisPC I feel the need to respond. A bit of background, we are both preparing forces for a very large Warhammer Ancient Battles game at Adepticon this year. PPC is on the crusader side, and I am the Captain of "Team Saracen".  All in all, there will be 7500+ points a side rumbling, putting Kingdom of Heaven to shame. With a jab, PPC posted a couple of pics of, like 4 or 5 knights and a spearman WIP. Well, in response, I present 96 (4 units of 24) Berbers finished and in the Cabinet. I did the painting over the last 4 weeks in my "spare" time.  Cleaning. etc was additional time. All figures in this batch are from Musketeer Miniatures (as is 90% of the army).  Still to go... More Spearmen, Cavalry, and some Christian allies.  This block was, IMHO, the hard part...

Here is core of my berber army (the berber units are to the front, behind them are my Saxons...) in my case. I will shoot some better shots this weekend and do a proper Army Build Blog.

Lost and the Damned | Traitor Guard [WH40K]

From my LATD army. For the traitor guard I used Space Marine and CSM heads with the rebreathers to give them a nurgley/chem dog look.  Really easy conversion that didi not cost a lot to pull off. I sculpted Nurgle Symbols on all the shoulder pads, etc. To "chaos-up" the Lascannons, I used the gun shields from a  Chaos Defiler.  Bubbles on the bases are made with black plastic 1/2 beads [doll eyes] from a craft store.

Thanks for looking.

Charity Auction Cathayan Ogre [WHFB]

Another (much more recent) figure I did for a charity auction ran by the Warhammer Forum.  I wanted to create a Cathayan Themed model that could be ran as a Maneater or real sexy unit champ. In this case I wanted the conversions to not be over the top and more natural.  I also went for a more (As far as style in relation to how I paint Ogres) blended skin tone, still leaving some heavy contrast to bring out some of figure muscle tone. Also, I am really pleased with the rust effects I achieved.

One of the first...

Lost and the Damned | Big Muties [WH40K]

Big Muties from my LATD Army... "Big" time fun from my bits box.  OOP GUO heads and bits, Ork Bits and loads of green stuff.

TAU Broadsides [WH40K]

A couple of fairly simple Tau Broadsides conversions I did up a while ago. Client wanted the pair to be different but still "linked" in theme.  And a shoulder gun like Predator on one of them. Lots of pinning for Strength, etc. My favorite is the one firing missiles, reminds me of "Robotech".  Heck all the Tau stuff has a Robotech thing going.  I remember watching Robotech on a grainy VHS tape (sigh...).

Bretonnian Crusaders [WHFB]

Just before the release of 8th Edition, I was working on a Brettonian Army that was themed around the Crusades, 1/2 the Army was to be Crusading Knights, Pilgrims, and the like. The other half was to be Araby themed [converted from GW figs and still using Bret rules for the units, etc. "Enemy of My Enemy" was the working title for the army.  I had built most of the Araby Stuff, which I will post once I wrangle up the pictures. Then 8th ed. came out so the project sat...and sat.. then went on ebay to build the coffers for some WAB action. From the Bret side of the army, I did manage to build the Grail Knight unit... I really wanted to capture the fury of a Zealous Charge...

Adepticon Charity Auction Figure [WH40K]

I was asked to contribute a painted miniature for a charity auction at Adepticon 2006. All contributing artists were to paint the same miniature, that being one of the free minis you get with you paid admission to the event.  Frankly, I am not the best painter so I was surprised to be asked [however, I have, IMHO, greatly improved since this, hopefully that will show in future posts of more recent work...]. The Model was a lovely IG themed female officer, although a very small and detailed figure.  I typically do not paint something so fiddly, so this was a challenge for me.  And someone did indeed buy it, so a win for everybody.

"Hey you!"  Note that I cleaned up her right thigh after seeing the
figure 3X normal size in this picture.

Navajo and Pueblo Warriors [28mm Historical]

A involved conversion project for a client's Western Themed 28mm Historicals collection.  8 total models, 1 of the Historical Navajo Leader  Manuelito, 4 Navajo Warriors, and 2 Pueblo Warriors. Each model was to have a mounted and dismounted version.  This was fairly daunting, but a fun challenge. The client provided me links to research as well as some imagery to go on. There were very specific basing requirements also.  I based the models on Foundry models, which conveniently came in mounted/dismounted pairs, I mainly reposed and added the correct kit as required.  As this was my first attempt at historical wargaming conversion as well as "realistic" horses, so I didn't want screw it up to say the least. I also painted this project, so I had to look up blanket colors, etc.   Pictures show a WIP (at various level) and then a Completed shot of each Warrior. Thanks for Looking.

...and you never know what you will be asked to do. Voodoo Priest [WHFB]

The fun of doing commission work (besides a little coin to blow on toy soldiers) is that you will make things you never would normally do for your own collection.  So with that said, here is a Orc Voodoo Priest and Goblin Witch Doctor that I was asked to do.  The priest was to look like the Voodoo dude (same actor as the un-cola man from old 7up commercials, which you would know if you were a fossil like me) from the James Bond movie "Live and let Die". Witch Doctor was supposed to look "nasty".  For the Priest I used an ogre body as the base, and the with doctor has a zombie (or maybe a ghoul, I  forget) body as the base.  I did these over a weekend as the client needed them right away, so it was a bit of a rush job.

Imperial Guard Roughriders [WH40K]

Another commission. Goal was to make IG roughriders that didn't look like Cossacks, just saying...

1/2 the squad... I am especially pleased with how the Sergeant and Vox Caster figures turned out. I wanted to make the hunting lances look like they could actually be practicable, as in they would be broken down somehow to carry when you weren't trying to shove them in an orifice of a ork tank during a charge.  You can see the lances in the broken down configuration on the Command figures.  I try to add a lot of detail that makes sense, for example the 2nd figure from the right has a grenade launcher stowed in his kit and has the appropriate ammo slung also. IMHO, consistent detail that is not over the top wins every time.

Orgyn Sized Chimera [WH40K]

A commission piece. Goal was an "IG Chimera that could actually carry 5 Ogryn".  This was a ton of fun to do (I love 40K Vehicles). I think it turned out pretty solid...

Concept Sketch that I sent to the client for approval.  For any large (or $$$) commission I will work up sketches in order ensure the client and I are on the same sheet, so to speak... Notice I will double up the tracks to give it a wider stance to counter the increased height.
